College Choices Seminar Part 1
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to last Saturday’s corporate meeting; I hope you enjoyed our time together as much as I did!
Because we don’t record these meetings (just to keep the set up as simple as possible), I post my notes from the message. Click here to download those notes.
Also, below are the discussion questions and fellowship points from the meeting. Thank you, parents, for discipling your teens in these ways. It’s our privilege to support you in any way that we can!

At our six14 parent + youth meeting this Saturday, we will begin a series on Scripture with a message from Psalm 19, “Savoring Scripture.” Please plan to join us at Plank Jr. High at 6:14 p.m. (snacks will be available at 5:30 p.m.).
If you missed the Age of Opportunity meeting last Saturday, or if you were there and want to review the message again, you can download Greg Somerville’s “Changing Bodies, Changing Minds” and its outline here.
On Saturday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Trainor house, we will have an Age of Opportunity meeting for parents. We will listen to and discuss part one of the seminar “Changing Bodies, Changing Minds” for parenting in the middle school years (by pastor Greg Somerville). Everyone is welcome to attend, including parents with children of any age.
Here is the assignment for the October growth group meeting:
Also, please note the future dates (these are changed from the original schedule):
At the last six14 parents + youth meeting, Tab recommended a message by Bob Kauflin. If you would like to listen to that message, you can download it for free here.
It was great being together last Saturday night for our parent-youth corporate meeting! Since we don’t record those meetings (just to keep our equipment set-up relatively simple), I am posting my manuscript from the message. You can download it here.
Also, for the questions we handed out, you can find them here.
Parents, please consider how the Lord might have you use those questions. They are intended merely as a tool to serve you as you pursue relational discipleship with your youth.
May our God richly bless all of your efforts as you pursue their hearts!
So grateful for you,
Tab
Dear friends,
I hope this note finds you doing well and enjoying God’s grace today! I’m writing to all our parents of high school youth to let you know about this year’s Growth Group.
Last year this was a real ministry highlight for me, and I’m very much looking forward to this coming year’s Growth Group! This year, we’re going to primarily work through a couple books: Bible Doctrine by Wayne Grudem and Worldliness, edited by CJ Mahaney. If you and your high school youth are planning to join us for Growth Group this year, please purchase those two books if you don’t already have them. Beginning with our second meeting (in October), we’ll start to dig into Bible Doctrine and Worldliness.
Our first meeting will be Saturday, Sept. 19th at 8:00 a.m. at my house. It looks like it will be best (church calendar-wise) if we generally meet on the 3rd Saturdays of each month; I hope that works for your schedules. I will let you know about any diversions from that schedule.
For our first meeting, I would like to cover two chapters of the outstanding book by John Piper entitled When I Don’t Desire God. I highly recommend this book for all of us, and it will serve our young people very much. It’s not always easy reading, but it’s well worth the effort. Happily, you don’t have to buy this book. You can download it in its entirety from the Desiring God website.
Prior to our first meeting, please ask your participating youth to read chapter 7 (“The Worth of God’s Word in the Fight for Joy”) and chapter 8 (“How to Wield the Word in the Fight for Joy”). It’s about 40 pages of reading, but it’s really good stuff! If possible, please read this yourself as well. Though we want our discussions to have the youth participating primarily, it would be great if we (as parents) were also benefitting from these very helpful materials ourselves.
If you have any questions about any of the above, please do let me know. It’s a great privilege for me to seek to support you, the parents of the youth of this church.
Grateful for you,
Tab
